Why Netskope relies on Akamai for future-proof API security
An in-depth look at how Netskope leverages Akamai to secure APIs

In a world where digital innovation is evolving at lightning speed, cloud, data, and network security are more important than ever. Netskope, a leading global player in cybersecurity, plays a key role in this landscape.
Thousands of organizations, including over 25 of the Fortune 100, trust Netskope to protect them from ever-changing threats, guide them through technological transformations, and help them comply with complex regulations.
The Challenge: Invisible threats within APIs
One of Netskope’s greatest challenges lies in protecting APIs—the digital connections between applications that are increasingly targeted by sophisticated attacks. Today, Netskope secures tens of thousands of APIs worldwide, pushing the limits of traditional application security.
When a customer revealed serious gaps in their API security, Netskope searched for a more powerful alternative. This led them to Noname Security (now acquired by Akamai) as the solution to help protect their clients against the rapidly evolving threats in the API landscape.
Netskope found that classic security tools like Web Application Firewalls (WAFs) often fail to detect complex or novel attack patterns targeting APIs. The vulnerabilities uncovered with their client made clear that a modern approach was necessary—one that goes far beyond reactive protection.
The solution: Integration of Akamai’s API Security
Netskope chose Akamai’s API Security platform to protect their entire API environment, both before and after deployment.
From a pre-production standpoint, Netskope utilized Akamai’s API security testing solution, designed to thoroughly test APIs before rollout. This solution automatically performs over 100 dynamic tests simulating malicious traffic, enabling early detection of vulnerabilities and misconfigurations.
This not only helps developers write safer code but also ensures that the API products delivered to customers are secure and reliable. This testing approach significantly improves rollout quality by preventing issues before they arise in production environments.
In the production phase, Netskope used Akamai’s Discovery module to obtain an accurate inventory of all internal, external, and third-party APIs for their clients. This module not only provided full visibility into the entire API landscape but also automatically classified all sensitive data exchanged through these APIs.
Once the inventory was fully mapped, the Runtime Protection module was activated. This module detects abnormal behavior in real time and immediately blocks suspicious API calls indicative of potential attacks. This allowed customer APIs to be continuously protected—even against advanced and hard-to-detect threats.
During the evaluation phase, the platform quickly won over Netskope’s development teams. They discovered that Akamai solved a common problem: the lack of an up-to-date API specification. Thanks to the platform, they could automatically generate a new specification—even for older APIs with missing or outdated documentation.
As a result, developers no longer needed to manually sift through source code to understand how an API works. The same efficiency was experienced in log and transaction analysis: queries could be executed across systems, with direct access to log entries without added complexity.

What can Evolane do for your organization?
